Leading the way with recycled plastic via mass balance.

All of our Knorr Professional buckets and lids are recyclable, where local recycling systems allow. Knorr is also leading the way with the sourcing of recycled plastic for our packaging. In 2022, we became the first Global Food Service brand in the world to source recycled polypropylene plastic for their buckets and lids*, using a mass balance approach. By the end of 2024, we saved 150 tons of virgin plastic from being produced.

But we’re not stopping there. In 2025, we’re expanding our use of packaging linked to 95% ISCC-PLUS certified recycled plastic (mass balance). These buckets and lids* will be rolled out across all of our Knorr Professional Savory range in Europe, which will help us further reduce our use of  virgin plastic per year.

So our Knorr Professional Savory range buckets and lids* now benefit from recycling technologies throughout their lifetime as they are sourced with recycled polypropylene plastic. This supports the circular economy from production to disposal, as the materials can be used again.

ISCC-PLUS certification

Our buckets and lids* are sourced with 95% certified recycled plastic via mass balance. The recycled material sourced for our buckets* uses the ISCC PLUS  mass balance approach which is Certified and audited by ISCC, tracking packaging waste all the way to new, food grade packaging. The way the technology works is by putting packaging waste through a process called pyrolysis, which takes the plastic all the way back to its original building blocks.  Those materials are then reconstructed into new, food grade materials.  This means that by purchasing our buckets, you are supporting the use of recycled materials in the production process.

Mass Balance approach
Mass balance is a method that helps us move toward a more sustainable economy. It allows recycled or renewable materials to be mixed with traditional ones during production. This way, we can gradually increase the use of recycled and bio-based materials while reducing our reliance on fossil resources - without needing to change the entire production process at once.
