1. Forgiveness is key for a supportive learning environment

“The café was specifically created for training purpose so naturally we become very forgiving, in terms of our training and leading. Truly making them feel like that they are able to ask any and all questions is the only way someone can learn."

Bianca Tavella, Founder and CEO of Fair Shot Cafe

2. Successful training isn’t a one-size fit all

“In order to provide successful training, it must be flexible and adapted to each individual. We all are unique and have our own learning styles, so it makes sense that a blanket framework doesn't work. At Fair Shot, we really try to be accommodating to each of our staff and trainees' needs and if we find one way of training isn't working, we'll shake it up and try another way the next day until we find something that sticks.”

3. Preparedness is key for successful onboarding

“For successful onboarding, I like to tell my trainees and staff every possible situation that can arise during service. That’s the best possible onboarding because then when they’re in the situation and it happens, they know how to deal with it.”

Monica Hide, General Manager at Fair Shot Cafe

4. A supportive work environment and a united purpose can encourage staff retention

“A [simple] way to retain is encouraging a culture of openness… If you encourage openness, it makes everything ok. It makes it a forgiving environment and it makes work less stress. You understand that everyone’s here to support you, not judge you. We’re all in it together!”

"Also, constantly reminding them of their role in the purpose of the social mission, and vision of Fair Shot helps them to know all the different aspects of the business because then they can understand what puzzle piece they are individually and where to place themselves in the bigger picture."

5. Inclusivity invites a culture of dedication and determination

“Because this opportunity is so rare, to be given a fair shot, they want it so much more, they’re so much more motivated, they will try 1000 times more, and they are just happy to help in anyway. They really understand the importance of learning and helping out with a future and finally getting paid. Its giving a fair shot to someone who really deserves it”
